Hon. Charles Hewitt

Charles Hewitt was a brilliant mathematician and inventor who became a titan of the iron industry. As President of the Trenton Iron Works, he developed a process for rolling gun barrels that led to the Trenton-Springfield rifle. His influence extended into politics, where he served in the NJ State Senate and was responsible for the creation of Chambersburg. His death in 1879 was marked by a funeral attended by over 2,000 people, reflecting his status as one of Trenton's most beloved citizens.
