Mercer Cemetery at Trenton is at 43 South Clinton Avenue, Trenton, NJ 08609, in downtown Trenton, across from the Trenton Transit Center. The mailing address is PO Box 457, Titusville, NJ 08560.

Mercer Cemetery was founded in 1843. It was New Jersey's first non-sectarian burial ground, open to people of any faith at a time when most burials took place in churchyards.

A rural cemetery is a burial ground designed as a landscaped park, with trees, paths and monuments, rather than a crowded churchyard. Mercer Cemetery was built in 1843 as part of this 19th-century Rural Cemetery Movement and was meant to serve as a public green space as well as a cemetery.

About 4,000 people are buried at Mercer Cemetery, including nearly 200 Civil War veterans.

Notable burials at Mercer Cemetery include Samuel R. Hamilton, the first popularly elected Mayor of Trenton; Sgt. John Pointon Beech, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient; Brevet Brigadier General John Sweeney Hammell; Capt. James Olden Paxson, who died of wounds received at Fort Wagner; U.S. Congressman Ira Wells Wood; historian John O. Raum, author of Trenton's first formal history; and pottery pioneers William Young and James Taylor. Read more on the Stories page.

The Friends of Mercer Cemetery at Trenton care for the grounds with the help of volunteers. The Friends work to honor those buried at the cemetery, restore the landscape and Victorian monuments, and keep the cemetery open as an urban park.

You can give online through the Friends of Mercer Cemetery at Trenton page, as a one-time or monthly gift of any amount. Donations support the restoration and upkeep of the grounds.
