John Sweeney Hammell

Leaving law school to fight in the Civil War, John Hammell proved to be a fearless leader. He was wounded at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, and survived imprisonment at Libby Prison. For his "distinguished gallantry" in leading his regiment from the Rapidan to Petersburg, he was brevetted Brigadier General. After the war, he moved west for his health, becoming a newspaper editor and postmaster in Montana before passing away at the young age of 31.
