John Briest

Mayor of Trenton & Newspaper Founder

John Briest was a central figure in Trenton media and politics. He founded the Emporium penny daily and the Trenton Sunday-Courier. After serving in various city roles, he was elected Mayor of Trenton, serving from 1871 to 1875. He was later appointed as the city's first Comptroller and was a founding member of the Trenton Battle Monument Association.

Established in 1843 as New Jersey’s first non-sectarian cemetery, Mercer Cemetery at Trenton is a historic 'rural cemetery' and greenspace. We are dedicated to preserving the stories and monuments of the 4,000 individuals who helped build our capital city.
