William Borrow
Inventor & Iron Works Superintendent
An English immigrant, William Borrow was the technical genius behind the Cooper-Hewitt Rolling Mill—the first of its kind in the world. He designed a revolutionary method for rolling iron rails for railroads, allowing for unprecedented production speeds. His monument features a relief carving of this invention. Though he died before he could secure a patent, his designs paved the way for the first fire-proof buildings in America.
